What is World AIDS Day?

World AIDS Day is an annual day of recognition held on December 1 each year. Since 1988, this global health day has been devoted to education and activism in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Today, more than 35 million people around the world are living with HIV. Many of these individuals are undiagnosed and those who do know their status often have no access to treatment. About 2 million individuals (more than 10% of them children) die of AIDS-related diseases every year.

Social awareness and medical advances are both important areas for improvement that receive focus on World AIDS Day. Organizations involved in the effort seek to educate communities about prevention and testing, reduce the stigma that is associated with HIV+ status, and raise funds for advances in treatment and better access for those already diagnosed. The red ribbon is a classic symbol of support for World AIDS Day. December first is a time to remember the more than 36 million people who have perished in the AIDS pandemic and help ensure that future generations do not have to lose their lives to HIV.
