What is Wimbledon? | ![]() |
Wimbledon is the oldest, biggest, and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. The tourney has been held annually at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. Unlike most tennis tournaments, the Wimbledon is played on grass which was tennis' original playing surface and gave way to the early name of "lawn tennis." The Wimbledown tournament is two weeks long and lasts from late June to early July.
Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tourneys; the other three tournaments, known as majors, are the US Open, the Australian Open, and the French Open. The order of the Gran Slam tourneys is the Australian Open, the French open, Wimbledon, and finally the US Open. A tennis player must win all four tournaments in one year to be crowned the Grand Slam Champion.
Wimbledown is also known as "The Wimbledown Championships" or "The British Open."
