|What is Watermelon Day?|
Watermelon Day, unlike many American food holidays, celebrates a fruit rather than fast food. This day is recognized on August 3rd each year, during the midst of watermelon harvest time. Whether eaten straight from a vine in the backyard garden or chilled overnight in the fridge for an extra refreshing taste, this melon is the ideal complement for a summertime BBQ.
As the name suggests, the watermelon is more than 90% water, so you’ll stay well-hydrated as you enjoy slice after slice. For a different take on the melon, try tossing it in a salsa or saving the rinds for pickling. Don’t forget to keep a few of the seeds for a spitting contest. You can even try to beat the world record of 68 feet 9.25 inches set in 1989 by Lee Wheelis!
