What is Ultra Music Festival? | ![]() |
Ultra Music Festival, also referred to as UMF or Ultra Miami, is an annual electronic music and arts festival held outdoors at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami, Florida every March. The festival was founded in 1999 by two business partners, Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes. The event was originally a one-day festival scheduled to be held at South Beach at the end of the Winter Music Conference, an annual weeklong electronic music conference also held in Miami since the mid 1980s. The event was also held at South Beach in 2000 but moved to Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami in 2001 due a to massive rise in attendance. In 2006, Ultra Music Festival moved to Bicentennial Park, also located in Downtown Miami, before moving back to Bayfront Park in 2012.
Since originating as a one-day music festival, UMF expanded to two-days in 2007, three-days in 2011, and a two-weekend event in 2013. Before 2013, the festival was scheduled at the end of the Winter Music Conference but starting in 2013 it will be held on the weekends before and after the conference.
Originating in the United States, UMF expanded internationally to Ibiza (2007), Sao Paulo (2008), Buenos Aires (2012), Seoul (2012), and Santiago (2013).
Some of the biggest names to perform at UMF include Tiesto, Deadmau5, MSTRKRFT, Calvin Harris, Justice, David Guetta, and Benny Benassi. Swedish House Mafia used the second weekend of Ultra Music Fesitval 2013 as the finale of their farewell tour titled "One Last Tour."
