What is Take Your Dog to Work Day? | ![]() |
The Friday after Father’s Day each year is dedicated to man’s best friend. In fact, it’s Take Your Dog to Work Day. This informal holiday was designated by Pet Sitters International in recognition of all the faithful, furry canines that bring joy to the lives of people everywhere. It was first celebrated in the U.K. in 1996 and expanded to the United States a few years later. The day is most popular in the U.S., but it is catching on in other English speaking countries from Canada to Australia.
The goal of Take Your Dog to Work Day is to introduce more people to the powerfully positive effects of companion animals. Hopefully, coworkers will enjoy these four-legged visitors so much that they will adopt or rescue a dog to be part of their own families. Employers, dog owners, and coworkers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with a common sense policy for hosting dogs at work to reduce the chances of an unfortunate encounter. A poster dog is selected each year, and photo contests are held as well. The winner gets a prize and selects a shelter or rescue group to receive a donation.
