What is Taco Day? | ![]() |
National Taco Day is an informal food holiday in the United States that celebrates the taco. This traditional Mexican-style flatbread sandwich features a corn or wheat tortilla (fried or soft) that is folded in half and stuffed with a variety of spicy and flavorful ingredients. Ground or pulled beef are popular base fillings, as are pork, fish, and chicken. Cheese, sour cream, guacamole, shredded lettuce, onion, salsa, and tomato are all favored toppings.
Americans eat more than 4.5 billion tacos a year, so having a national day in the taco's honor is simply another reason to enjoy this delicious food. Like Ice Cream Day and similar celebrations, this day is largely about selling (and eating) more of a particular type of food item. Many restaurants advertise this event heavily and offer free tacos to customers as a way to engage the community and generate more business.
