What is India's Republic Day? | ![]() |
The Republic Day holiday in India celebrates the day on which the Constitution of India was finalized. This constitution replaced the 1935 Government of India Act as the official governing document of India. The Constitution of India was signed on the 26th of January in 1950.
The reason the 26th of January was chosen as the official Republic Day holiday was to honor the date that India’s Declaration of Independence came into existence. Republic Day is one of three national holidays in the country of India. The other two national holidays are Independence Day and Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday.
The main Republic Celebration takes place in New Delhi, the national capital. This celebration’s main feature is the holiday parade that takes place on the ceremonial boulevard called the “Rajpath” before the Indian President.
