What is Reading Festival? | ![]() |
Founded in 1971, Reading Music Festival is an annual music festival held at Little John's Farm in Reading, England that has become the world's oldest popular music festival that is still currently operating. Reading Festival originates from the National Jazz Festival, which was created by Harold Pendleton in 1961, and changed names and locations several different times, such as Kempton Park Festival and Plmpton Music Festival, before arriving at its permanent location at Reading in 1971.
2013's festival lineup includes Green Day, Eminem, Skrillex, Phoenix, Alt-J, Dillon Francis, the Alkaline Trio, Biffy Clyro, System of a Down, Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, and The Lumineers.
Over the years, Reading Festival has incorporated musical genres of all sorts. These genres include, but are not limited to, rock, indie rock, progressive rock, punk rock, blues, heavy metal, new wave, pop, britpop, hip hop, and rap.
Some of the biggest names to perform at the Reading Music Festival includeGuns N' Roses, Muse, Blink-182, Weezer, The Strokes, Green Day, Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Alice Cooperand The Ramones.
Reading Music Festival inspired Leeds Music Festival in 1999, which like Reading is named after the location of where the festival is held in England and is actually held over the same August bank holiday weekend with identical artist lineups.
