What is National Pet Day? | ![]() |
National Pet Day was launched by animal behaviorist and pet expert Colleen Paige in 2005. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about animal welfare. The motto of National Pet Day is, "Don't Shop! Adopt!", encouraging individuals to provide homes to unwanted but adoptable animals. Events are organized all over the United States to honor pets. Dog washes, pet photo shoots, talent demonstrations, petting zoos, and educational opportunities abound.
With more than 86 million pet cats and 78 million pet dogs in the U.S., many Americans already have a furry family member to celebrate with during National Pet Day. It's a perfect time to visit a dog park, by a new scratching post, or teach an old pet some new tricks. Even individuals who aren't ready to offer a "forever home" can do their part by volunteering at a shelter or rescue organization, making a donation, or helping out pet owners in the local community.
