What is Shrove Tuesday? | ![]() |
Shrove Tuesday, commonly referred to as Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday (first day of Lent) in either February or March. It is widely known as Pancake Day because many people celebrate the day by eating pancakes. The day is commonly associated with Mardi Gras, a.k.a. Fat Tuesday, which refers to the practice of eating richer foods for the last night before the Lent season begins, which is Ash Wednesday.
The term Shrove Tuesday comes from the word "shrive" which means to "confess." Many denominations of Christians celebrate the day including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Roman Catholics, and several more. They use the day to focus on self-examination in order to consider what wrong doings they need to repent for as well as to focus on any areas of their spiritual life that they need to seek for God's help in dealing with.
