The Oscars, originally known as the Academy Awards, is an awards event held every year to reward those in the cinematic industry for their "excellence in cinematic achievements." The winners of the 12+ categories with movies from various movie genres receive statues called the "Academy Award of Merit." The Oscars is hosted by the Academy of Motions Pictures Arts and Scienes, or AMPAS for short. The AMPAS was created by a studio executive of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer named Louis B. Mayer. Mayer created the AMPAS as a way to try and improve the industry's public image.
The first Oscars Award Show was hosted in 1929 at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood - a suburb of Los Angeles, CA. To this day, The Oscars are still held in Los Angeles, California.
It is uncertain wherre the name "Oscars" originated. TIME Magazine is credited with having one of the earliest mentions of the word "Oscar" in print when an article was written about the award show in 1934. Walt Disney, one of the most recognizeable names in history, is credited with thanking the Academy for his Oscar at the award show in 1932. The trophy handed out during the award show was officially named as "Oscar" by the AMPAS in 1939.
