What is New York Fashion Week? | ![]() |
First hosted in 1943, the New York Fashion Week is a semi annual fashion event that occurs in February and September in New York City, New York, United States. The event typically lasts been seven and nine days. International fashion brands use this week as an opportunity to reveal their new fashion collections to buyers, the media, and the general public. Other events also occur within the NY Fashion Week, such as the Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week New York and the MADE Fashion Week.
New York Fashion Week was originally called "Press Week" when it was created in 1943, the first ever organized fashion week in the world. The original purpose of the show was to detract attention away from French fashion during World War II. As a result of the war, it was impossible to travel to Paris in order to attend the numerous French fashion shows. The fashion week in New York was created by publicist Elanor Lambert to publicize and showcase American fashion designers for the media. Prior to this event, American designers were typically neglected by fashion journalists. The first Press Week was extremely successful and as a result, the most popular fashion magazines such as Vogue began to feature American fashion.
Since it's creation, the New York Fashion Week has become of the four major fashion weeks along with London, Milan, and Paris.
