The Newport Folk Festival is an annual music festival held at the Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, United States towards the end of July. Founded in 1959 by Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, Peter Seeger, George Wein, and Albert Grossman, the American festival centered around folk music was created as the counterpart to the already established Newport Jazz Festival, which was founded in 1954 . For fourteen-years, the Newport Folk Festival ceased to exist after its 1971 event before being revived in 1985.
Originally featuring folk music, folk rock, country music, blues,and bluegrass, the Newport Folk Festival has expanded to include more contemporary musical genres such as alternative country, indie folk, and folk punk.
Some of the biggest folk names to perform at the Newport Folk Festival include Joan Baez, Bob Gibson, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters, Mike Bloomfield, Allman Brothers Band, Jimmy Buffet, Damian Marley, Edward Sharpe, Fleet Foxes, and the Decemberists.
