What is National Cake Day? | ![]() |
National Cake Day, like Cookie Day and Chocolate Day, is a favorite holiday for indulging in a tasty treat. Humans have always had a sweet tooth. In the early days of baking, cakes were typically yeast breads sweetened with honey and fruits. Today, they are quick breads (leavened with baking powder) and full of sugar and butter. Cake is a very versatile dessert, since it can be flavored and embellished in so many ways. It's the desert of choice for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and retirement parties.
Cakes can be bigger than life-and they are made for sharing. In 2014, Fairy Liquid in London crafted a cake sculpture that was more than 39 feet wide, 32 feet long, and 16 inches high. It served 12,000 people in Westfield Shopping Centre, with each person making a donation to the Make-A-Wish charity in exchange for a slice. Want to start smaller? Put together a bake sale, a cake bake-off, or a cake walk to bring your local community together for a piece of something that's delicious to the last crumb.
