What is Melbourne Comedy Festival? | ![]() |
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) is the largest festival of its kind in Australia, and one of the top comedy fests in the world. Over the course of three-and-a-half weeks from March through mid-April, this event offers loads of laughs and entertains over 630,000 people. The festival features hundreds of shows with thousands of local and world-renowned comedic artists who flood the city with humor.
Melbourne's Town Hall is the center of the festival, but events are held at locations throughout this major metropolitan area. Traditional standup is the mainstay of the fest. But cabaret shows, theatrical presentations, comedy sketches, musical acts, and art exhibits also abound. New comedians are nurtured and encouraged through programs such as "Class Clowns" (for high-school students) and the open mic "Raw Comedy" competition. The indigenous humor of Australia is celebrated and cultivated through the "Deadly Funny" comedy workshop and contest for the native peoples of Australia.
