What is Labor Day? | ![]() |
Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September and was created as a way to celebrate the contribution of workers to the United States economy.
There is an ongoing debate as to who is credited with the original proposal of this United States federal holiday. Some say it was a machinist named Matthew Maguire while others say it was a member of the American Federation of Labor, Peter J. McGuire; both proposals were made in 1882. The first state to recognize Labor Day was Oregon on February 21, 1887. Labor Day later became a federal holiday in 1894. Grover Cleveland was the president responsible for signing the Labor Day holiday into law.
Labor Day 2016 typically serves as a day of rest and signals the end of the summer season, while Memorial Day signals the start of the summer season. Labor Day also signals the start to the National Football League's (NFL) and National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) football seasons. Common ways to celebrate Labor Day are picnics, bar-b-ques, fireworks, and public social events and gatherings.
