What is India's Independence Day? | ![]() |
Independence Day is an Indian national holiday that celebrates India achieving independence in 1947 after being under British rule since 1858. This period of British rule is commonly known as the British Raj or the “period of domination.” India’s Independence Day is celebrated on the 15th of August annually.
India was able to achieve independence from Britain following an independence movement that was primarily characterized by nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. This independence movement was led by the Indian National Congress, one of the two major Indian political parties and is commonly referred to as the “INC” or simply “Congress.”
Independence Day celebrations include extravagant cultural events, parades, and flag hoisting ceremonies. The main Independence Day celebration occurs in Delhi with the highlighting occurring when the Indian prime minister raises the Indian flag at the Red Fort followed by a speech.
The Indian people celebrate by presenting the Indian flag on their clothes, vehicles, and around their houses; listening to patriotic music or watching patriotic films, and spending time with their friends and family.
