|What is Hot Dog Day?|
Hot Dog Day is a casual food celebration day that recognizes one of the most popular foods in the United States. This day sees many Americans firing up the BBQ to cook record numbers of these slim sausages. Hot dog eating contests abound, and industry groups including the National Hot Dog & Sausage council sponsor events to benefit charity. Some fundraisers result in hundreds of thousands of dollars being donated to causes such as cystic fibrosis research and children's cancer centers.
Weiner dog races, "bun runs", and other hot dog-themed festivities mark the occasion. The nation's love of hot dogs goes all the way to the top, with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch on Capitol Hill being one of the highlights of the summer. With about 7 billion hotdogs consumed every year, July 23 is just another day to celebrate America's favorite sausage.
