What is Halloween? | ![]() |
Halloween is observed on October 31 and is typically celebrated by horror movies, costume parties, trick-or-treating, visiting haunted houses or attractions, scary stories, and pumpkin carving.
Halloween marks the beginning of Hallowmas, a three day religious observence that includes Halloween, All Saint's Day, and All Souls' Day. The name Halloween, or Hallowe'en, is a contraction of the phrase "All Hallows' Evening," which is another way to say "All Saints' Evening" since the word Hallows and Saints can be used interchangeably. Halloween, or All Hallows' Evevning, marks the night before All Hallows' Day, more commonly known as All Saints Day. All Saints' Day is celebrated on the 1st of November and commemorates all the saints, both those saints that are known and unknown.
Some common Halloween foods and snacks are candy corn, caramel corn, caramel or candy apples, candy bars, and pumpkin pastries and treates, especially pumpkin pie.
