What is Gandhi Jayanti? | ![]() |
Gandhi Jayanti is an Indian national holiday that celebrates the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, who is referred to as the “Father of the Nation.” The term “Father of the Nation” is used sparingly to honor a man who is unanimously referred to as the driving force behind the founding of a specific country, state, or nation. Gandhi’s birthday falls on the 2nd of October.
Indians celebrate Gandhi Jayanti by participating in services filled with prayer and hosting tributes across the country. Cities also hold painting and essay contests with the topics glorifying peace, non-violence and Gandhi’s personal efforts as part of India’s Independence movement.
It is also common for the Indian people to sing Gandhi’s favorite Hindu devotional song titled “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” (Ram Dhun for short).
Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three Indian national holidays. The other two holidays are Republic Day, January 26th, and Independence Day, August 15th.
The distribution of alcohol is banned on Gandhi Jayanti, as well as the other national holidays, as the Indian government has designated these holidays as dry days.
