|What is Edinburgh Festival Fringe?|
The Fringe Festival, officially known as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, is the world's biggest art festival and occurs every August for three weeks in Edinburgh, which is the capital city of Scotland. The event is a major celebration of arts and entertainment as thousands of partcipants perform on hundreds of stages that are setup all across Edinburgh. In 2013, there was a record 45,464 total performances of 2,871 shows.
The name of the event dates back to the first unoffical Fringe Festival. In 1947, 8 separate theater groups arrived uninvited to perform at the Endinburgh International Festival, which was created to try and celebrate European culture as a whole in the wake of World War II. Even though they were not invited to the festival, it did not stop them from performing on the "fringe" of the festival. The Fringe Festival continued on for several more years unofficially before the Festival Fringe Society was formed in 1958. The creation of the society solidied the foundation of the festival as it scheduled the collection of performances, provided artisits with the information they requested/demanded, and published the Fringe Program while also creating a main box office for the entire festival.
Currently, the societ is a registered charity and has three main goals:
- provide the necessary support, advice and encouragement to the plethora of artists, producers and venues who as a whole create the Fringe Festival each and every year.
- assist the audiences with complete and accurate information and ticketing that is up to date
- to promote the wonderful festival and help it gain attention from the rest of the world
