What is Dussehra? | ![]() |
Dussehra is observed on the tenth day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Ashvin. Dussehra celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and many Hindus believe it is good luck to start a new venture or business on Dussehra. It is also the tenth and final day of the Navrati festival, which is dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga. It is common for people to observe this holiday through prayer, meditation, and offerings of food to gods of their choice. Outdoor fairs and extensive parades are common as well.
In India, government and federal offices, post officies, banks and schools are closed on the day of Dussehra 2014. Other offices and stores have the option of being closed or open, usually for limited hours, on this day. Public transportation is typically limited on this day as well.
