|What is Dance Day?|
International Dance Day was founded in 1982 by the International Dance Council. Dance Day celebrates the power of dance as an art that needs no translation-one that reaches across all barriers to connect people everywhere. It is celebrated on the 29th of April which is, incidentally, the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (the man credited with creating ballet in its modern form).
A well-respected choreographer or dancer is selected every year as the spokesperson for the day. This individual is responsible for crafting a message that will be sent out around the world to raise awareness and appreciation for all forms of dance. One of the goals of the Council is to increase funding for dance and make it a part of curriculum in more educational institutions. Performances, classes, festivals, flashmobs, and other celebrations of dance are hosted in many locations to introduce the public to the beauty and artistry of dance.
