What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the term coined to describe the online shopping deals and promotions available on the Monday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The term was created to describe the efforts by online retailers to encourage buyers to shop online rather than in stores. Unlike Black Friday, which is the busiest shopping day of the year, Cyber Monday 2017 deals are only avaiable online, hence the word "cyber." This online "holiday" provides the best opportunity for online retailers to try and compete with the much more popular Black Friday. 

The term Cyber Monday was first used in 2005 by Shop.org in one of their November press releases. Shop.org came up with the name when a 2005 survey of online retailers revealed that 77% of online retailers said that their sales increased significantly the Monday following Thanksgiving. As a response, online sellers started to offer online discounts and promotions to continue this trend of increased post-Thnkasgiving online shopping as the popularity of Cyber Monday continued to skyrocket. 

Since the term's inception in 2005, Cyber Monday has spread to other countries including Japan, Canada, Australia, the UK, and Germany.
