What is Columbus Day?

Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday of October.  Columbus Day celebrates the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas on October 12, 1492.  This is a controversial holiday because Columbus' arrival prompted European settlement which would eventually lead to the cultural demise of the Native Americans.
