The College Football Championship Game, which replaced the BCS National Championship, is the third and final game as part of the College Football Playoff (CFP) system that began in 2014. The winner of this game is crowned the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) national champion. Under this sysetm, the top four teams play in two semifinal games to determine which two teams will compete in the championship game.
Six bowl games including the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, and Peach Bowl games will create a three-year rotation of hosting the semifinal games. The rotation pairs are Rose/Sugar, Orange/Cotton, and Fiesta/Peach. These six bowl games are known as the "New Year's Six" because they are all played on two consecutive days that usually include's New Year's Day.
The two winners of the semifinal games will compete in the College Football Championship Game. This game will occur on the first Monday that is at least six days after the semifinal games, which are typically played on January 1st. The host of the championship game is similair to the process of bidding for the opportunity to host the Super Bowl or NCAA Final Four (basketball). The winner of the game will receive the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy, which is sponsored by Dr. Pepper.
This new system does not use computer rankings, like the BCS did, but rather uses a committee of thirteen experts to rank and seed the teams. This new system was developed out of a growing desire to find an alternative to the BCS system after the 2003 and 2004 seasons ended in controversy. At a minimum, the College Football Playoff system will run through the 2025 season and will be aired on the ESPN networks for those twelve-years.
