What is Burning Man? | ![]() |
Burning Man is an annual event hosted in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, United States. The event lasts for a week and is described as mass experience in community, art, radical self-expression and radical self-reliance. The event is organized and hosted by Black Rock City, LLC. In 2011, Burning Man began to transfer management from under Black Rock City, LLC. to a new non-profit organization called the Burning Man Project. This transition will take a total of three years and is a result of constant fighting and bickering between members of the board.
The annual event begins on the final Monday in August and ends on the first Monday of September, which coincides with the American Labor Day Holiday. Attendance continues to grow every year and there is little doubt that Burning Man in 2014 will break the record set the year prior.
The roots of Burning Man is still under debate but it is agreed that they date back to the 1980's when solstice bonfire gatherings were hosted on Bakers Beach in San Francisco, California. The credit for the original Burning Man bonfire gathering is given to Larry Harvey, Jerry James, and their friends when they burned a 9-foot tall wooden sculpture of a man. It is commonly said that the inspiration for this original burning man event was a result of Larry Harvey attending solstice bonfires on Bakers Beach with his girlfriend, Janet Lohr, who was good friends with the bonfire's host, Mary Grauberger (sculptor).
The original Burning Man event totaled a number of 20 attendees while 2012's Burning Man set an attendance record with over 56,000 people attending.
