Bumbershoot Music Festival is a major international music and arts festival held every year in Seattle, Washing, United States. Founded in 1941, Bumbershoot has become one of the largest music festivals in North American. Held over Labor Day weekend at the Seattle Center, Bumbershoot includes musical and artistic acts performed in indoor theaters, large event halls, a large outdoor stadium, and on outdoor stages.
Bumbershoot was originally funded as a three-day festival by the city of Seattle in 1971 with the name of the "Mayor's Arts Festival." The name of the festival changed to "Bumbershoot" in 1973 as it expanded to a five-day festival with over 200,000 attendees. Bumbershoot then expanded to 10-days the following year as more than 325,000 people attended the festival. The largest Bumbershoot festival was that next year in 1975 when it expanded to eleven days, but has since then trimmed down to only a single weekend event over Labor Day weekend.
Since 1980, Bumbershoot has been produced by One Reel, a Northwest based non-profit organization. In 2007, One Reel signed a five-year agreement with AEG Live, a major international promoter of rock conerts and large events, to help co-produce Bumbershoot. AEG Live's main responsiblity is to help book musical acts.
Performances at Bumbershoot over the years include light shows, folk music, country music, hip-hop, indie rock, soapbox car races, robotic art, poetry slams, breaking dancing, circus acts, theater, dance, arts and crafts, body painting, and magic shows.
