|What is Boston Marathon?|
The Boston Marathon is a major marathon held every year on Patriots' Day, which is the third Monday in April, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Founed in 1897 by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), the Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world and is one of the six World Marathon Majors. The five other World Marathon events are the Tokyo Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York Matathon.
The number of participants has grown from merely 18 in 1897 to over 25,000 racers each year. The number of spectators has also grown to over 500,000 every year, making it the most widely viewed sporting event in the New England area.
The Centennial Boston Marathon in 1996 produced the world's largest marathon ever when over 38,000 people entered the race, 36,500+ racers actually started the race and roughly 35,750 finished the entire marathon.
