What is Bay To Breakers? | ![]() |
The Bay To Breakers is an extremely popular footrace held every year in San Francisco, California, USA on the 3rd Sunday of May. The name of the race comes from the fact that the event begins near the "bay," a couple of blocks from The Embarcadero on the San Francisco Bay, and ends at the "breakers," which is the term used to describe the waves breaking onto Ocean Beach. The Bay To Breakers route is 7.46 miles, 12.01 km, long and is extremely popular as a result of the variety of costumers (some including varying degrees nudity) while participating on cheering on the race.
For 24 years, from 1986 to 2010, the Bay To Breakers race was the world's biggest footrace with over 110,000 people participating each year. This record was broken by the City2Surf footrace in Sydney, Australia. In 2015, Zappos.com became the race's official sponsor so technically the event is now titled "Zappos.com Bay To Breakers."
