Australia Day is observed on January 26th of every year and celebrates the Australian country and culture. Referred to as "The National Holiday of Australia," Australians come together on this day to reflect on the achievements of the country. Celebrations include large community events, concerts, festivals, reflecting on the diverse society and landscaoe, giving out official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies. This special day also signifies the anniversary of the arrival of the 1st fleet of British Ships to Port Jackson, New South Wales in 1788. On that day, the Great britain Flag was raised at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip.
This special day was first celebrated as early at 1808, the holiday was not adopted by all the states and territories until 1935. It was finally marked as an official public holiday in 1994 and has become the largest civic event in Australia. Other names for Australia Day include Anniversary Day, Invasion Day, Foundation Day, and ANA Day.
