Auckland Anniversary Day celebrates the anniversary of the arrival of William Hobson in the Bay of Islands in 1840. William Hobson later became the first Governor of New Zealand. Auckland Anniversary Day is a public holiday celebrated in the northern half of the North Island of New Zealand. It is typically celebrated on the Monday nearest to January 29th of every year.
