April Fool's Day, or All Fools' Day, falls on the first of April every year. Although it is not a formal holiday, April 1st has been popular as a day for pranks and practical jokes since the 19th century. Canada, Brazil, Europe, Australia, and the U.S. all recognize the April Fool's Day tradition. Each country has its own way of celebrating the day. For example, in France, children will attach a paper fish to the back of an unsuspecting schoolmate. In fact, they call April Fool's Day "April Fish" in that nation. Sending a friend, acquaintance, or coworker on a fool's errand (one that is impossible to complete) is popular in Ireland. In the United States, April Fool's can be quite elaborate and require days of preparation. Media outlets and major corporations may even issue fake news releases on this day to engage with the public. The tradition is a lighthearted one, and most hoaxes and pranks are intended to be harmless.
