What is Academy Awards?

The Academy Awards, now officially known as The Oscars, is an annual formal event hosted to give our awards for excellence in cinematic achievements. The Academy Awards is organized and managed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scienes (AMPAS). Winners at the Academy Awards receive statues called the "Academy Award of Merit" and are given to inividuals who display "distinctive achievement" within the cinematic industry.

The first Academy Awards Show occured in 1929 at Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood, California. There are more than a dozen caterogies of awards given out at the Academy Awards Show and include films from various film genres. 

The Academy Awards Show is one of the most popular award cemeonies in the world and is televised live in over 100 countries every single year. And being the oldest award ceremony in media, the Grammy Awards (music), Emmy Awards (TV), and Tony Awards (theater) were all created following the model set by the Academy Awards.
